Batteries using Zinc as the anode have a long history. However, most of them were primary batteries that could not be recharged. The realization of rechargeable zinc batteries that are less flammable and relatively inexpensive has been considered for decades. A major obstacle to the practical use of these batteries is the phenomenon of dendrites, needle-like deposits of Zn on the negative electrode, which penetrate the separator and cause a short circuit when the battery is repeatedly recharged. We have developed unique separators that solve this problem.

Key Features

  1. Original dense structure of mineral powder in sheet form: Inhibits dendrite growth and extends battery life
  2. High ionic conductivity: Enables rapid charge and discharge, supporting high efficiency
  3. Flexibility and durability: Can be used in the same way as conventional separators
  4. Chemical and thermal stability: Designed to withstand high temperatures and strong alkaline environments

Applications

Nippon Shokubai's separators are designed for rechargeable zinc batteries, e.g., nickel-zinc, manganese-zinc, and zinc-air batteries. These batteries are expected to be used in a variety of applications, including renewable energy storage, backup power for data centers, forklifts, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and wearables.
